The hillside here was mined for copper as early as the late 1700s. Though long since built over, the old underground mining area known as the Schuyler Mines is full of caverns and shafts just below the surface. In 1989, some of these cavities collapsed into sinkholes, damaging the Schuyler condominiums on Schuyler Avenue.
