Robert Smithson was the pioneering conceptualist and land artist who grew up nearby. He wrote the essay Tours of the Monuments of the Passaic, and made Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake. He is buried in the Hillside Cemetery, across Route 3 from the Meadowlands Museum. His grave overlooks the Meadowlands.
