Two large gas tanks, prominent landmarks on the Turnpike, are holding tanks for natural gas coming via a three-foot diameter pipeline from the Gulf of Mexico, gas destined for use by power plants and other commercial and consumer customers in the region. The tanks are next to a compressor station which maintains the high pressure needed to keep the gas in liquid form.
