Conceptual Designs and Planning Approaches
Submitted by the Finalists in the Fresh Kills Landfill to Landscape Design Competition.

In early 2001, the City of New York closed Fresh Kills, the largest landfill in the world, and solicited proposals for its redevelopment. In July 2001, six finalists were awarded funding to prepare a “Conceptual Design and Planning Approach” proposal. In December these proposals went on public display in Staten Island, and on the City of New York’s web site, so the public could help evaluate the plans. The CLUI has posted print-outs of the proposals from the City’s web site on our bulletin board in Los Angeles, enabling interested members of the public to consider this fascinating process: the conceptual re-engineering of this most significant man-made mountain, and the proposed interpretations of this site through the physical transformations of landscape architecture.
