Back to the Bay: An Exploration of the Marginal Zones of the San Francisco Bay

The San Francisco Bay both divides and unites the ring of urban space known as the Bay Area. This inside edge of this vast urban complex represents a remarkable landscape of terrestrial engineering that evokes the history, economy, needs and desires of the society that has formed on its shores. As a back space, this shoreline landscape contains many of the land uses that the city pushes to its edges, such as water treatment facilities, landfills, shooting ranges, power plants, military bases, oil refineries and airports. More recently this realm has become, again, a shore front, as the community redevelops, rediscovers, and redefines its identity along its front door, the shared empty space of The Bay.
