Everything starts and ends on the ground. - Damon Farragut

Editor's Note: On the Horizon

Our new book, Up River: Man-Made Sites of Interest along the Hudson from the Battery to Troy, is the culmination of four years of focus on the Hudson River, an area of the country which, like many others, is rapidly changing. As New York City spreads urbanization north, industrial and abandoned areas, especially along the waterfront, become domesticated and gentrified. Up River is a sweeping bird’s eye look at this moment in the Hudson’s continuing course of empire. Up River will be exhibited at the Parc Foundation Gallery, 29 Bleecker Street, NY, from May 9 to June 14. Check our website for more information about the book, exhibit, and related events!

Currently scheduled CLUI projects in the coming year include Massachusetts Monuments: Images of Points of Interest in the Bay State from the Center for Land Use Interpretation in the exhibit Badlands: New Horizons in Landscape, opening May 24 at MassMoCA, and further installments of the ongoing CLUI examination of the waste stream, in Los Angeles, also in late May. At the end of 2008? Its oil, all the way.
