Kitt Peak Observatory, Arizona

More than 20 telescopes are clustered at the summit of Kitt Peak, from radio telescopes to solar telescopes. It is the location of the 4-meter National Optical Astronomy Observatory Mayall telescope, one of the world's largest, and the unusual McMath-Pierce solar telescope, which projects an image of the sun using an almost 500-foot long shaft that extends deep underground. For the bulk of its existence, Kitt Peak had been owned and operated by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and is also supported by NASA, the Department of Energy, and various academic institutions.
