Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, Maryland

A nonprofit R&D lab, which specializes in weapons development, air and missile defense, force projection, and homeland security. It is operated by Johns Hopkins University, and caters primarily to the U.S. government (particularly the U.S. Navy).  Similar in some respects to MIT's Draper Lab, this lab was formed by the Department of Defense in WWII, as a weapons research and development lab and think tank. Located on a 399-acre site separate from the University, with over 20 major buildings, in addition to a satellite campus. Past efforts at the lab have included lie-detection software for the FBI, Tomahawk missile upgrades for the Navy, radar systems for the U. S. Customs Service, and single-operator control of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms.
