Grant County International Airport, Washington

Until 1965, this massive, remote airport in eastern Washington was Larson Air Force Base, primarily a bomber training base for B-52 crews. It is now run by the County, and houses an interesting mix of functions around the 13,500-foot runway, one of the largest in the country: Japan Air Lines used the facility to train its 747 pilots and flight crews from 1968 until 2008; Boeing has a large test facility; mushrooms have been raised in one of the old bomber hangars; a community college has taken over some of the buildings, and various aerospace R&D companies have facilities here, some engaged in secretive programs for the defense department.
