Crane & Company, Massachusetts

The complex of two paper mills and related offices around Dalton, Massachusetts, which comprise Crane & Company, constitute the sole source of paper for U.S. currency. Crane has been making durable paper out of cotton fiber at this location for almost 200 years, and has been the only supplier to the U.S. Treasury Department since 1879. Security is high at portions of the plant, as new anti-forgery technologies are worked out here, and old bills are brought in by the truckload to be recycled. Crane has also been involved in the design and production of banknotes for Sweden, Lebanon, and Columbia, among other countries.
