Calico Ghost Town Park, California

A ghost town theme park, built out of the fairly extensive remains of an actual old silver mining town dating back to 1881. Walter Knott, founder of the Knott's Berry Farm theme park, restored the ghost town, after taking much of it to Orange County, where he used it to begin his theme park there (near the present Disneyland). Now the San Bernardino Regional Parks Department manages the site, a popular tour bus stop. Shops line the town's old main street, selling souvenirs. Gunfight performances are occasionally scheduled, and a mini train ride loops the fringe of the townsite. At least one of the old mining tunnels is open to the public, with talking miner figures activated by motion sensors–just a fraction of the 30 miles of tunnels around Calico, on 14 levels underground.
