Direct experience of places beyond the
familiar limits of ones local community is often
obtained while as a tourist. Whether one is self-guided
through the landscape by tourbooks, or on a programmatic
excursion under the direction of a tourguide, this kind
of experience both enriches and confuses the travelers
sense of the places they visit. Points of interest along
a tourists route have an apparent heightened relevance,
while the tourist often feels a sense of a somewhat
disturbing passivity, having relinquished control to
someone else. This state of being, and the industry
that promotes it, is of interest to all of us who have
"been there."
