Pumping stations
built around New Orleans keep the sea at bay. Due to rising water
and compressing soil, portions of the city are six feet below sea
level and sinking. An elaborate system of dykes and pumps, built
with the supervision of Dutch engineers, keep it from becoming America's
Venice.

This fence runs along
the USA / Mexico Border. It was constructed from surplus runway
mat sections left over from the Vietnam War. In 1993, by US government
order, the Army Corps of Engineers extended the wall beyond the
beach, well into the Pacific Ocean, ensuring that only the best
swimmers can cross here.
